Biography
James received his B.A. at the American University of Beirut (AUB), and his M.A. and Ph.D. at Brown University. His early training was strictly In Analytic Philosophy with special interest in Ethics, Epistemology, and Philosophy of Language. After teaching for one year at Brown and two at AUB, he joined this Department in 1963. His work continued in the same vein until the late 1960's when his interest began to shift to a mix of readings in Nietzsche, Foucault, Husserl, Heidegger, and Freud, thus eventually making him by default the Department's "Continentalist." His modest scholarly output consisted of some rather interesting short forays into areas of Ethics, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy in Literature, Philosophy of History, Phenomenology, and Psychoanalysis. Some of these appeared as journal articles, others as papers given at conferences. In 1999 he retired from the University and with that his activity in professional Philosophy ceased.
