This course is a graduate seminar in moral and political philosophy. Its topic is future generations. We will discuss questions such as: Is it appropriate to adopt a positive social discount rate for future generations, as economists typically do? Should we understand intergenerational justice from behind a Rawlsian veil of ignorance? Can we harm future people if we also thereby bring them into existence and their lives are worth living? Do we need special institutions to represent the interests of future people? We will discuss the views of theorists such as John Rawls, Derek Parfit, and Avner de-Shalit.
