Science is supposed to be a knowledge community par excellence because it is thought to create knowledge in efficient, effective, and non-discriminatory ways. In this seminar, we’ll discuss the ways in which social structures within science promote or hinder science’s goals. Readings will include work from the sociology, philosophy, and economics of science. Topics will include norms and incentives in science, invisible colleges, governance models of science, and more.
