Neuroethics Research Group members contribute to the educational mission of the UW Center for Neurotechnology through teaching, mentoring, and creation of neuroethics content at the UW. Examples include:
- Participation in the summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, sponsored by the NSF.
- Neuroethics course (PHIL 442) “Neurotechnological advances offer novel ways to address problems of movement, mood, and communication, but also call into question fundamental philosophical assumptions about the kinds of creatures we are. Explores questions of personal identity, moral and legal responsibility, privacy, security, normality, and justice in the context of neurotechnologies.” (5 credits)
- Guest lectures on neuroethics for courses in neural engineering, ethics and technology, neuroscience, psychology, etc.
- Participation in the UW’s Washington Initiative for Neuroscience (WIN) effort.
- Journal club/reading groups in neuroethics via collaboration with the RSO CoNECT.
- Hosting and mentorship for UW Mary Gates Scholars.
- Hosting of visiting scholars. Past visitors includes:
- Beatriz Mamede, law & neurotechnology, Fulbright Visiting Scholar from Portugal, 2024-2025.
- Bouk van Balen, BCI ethics, visiting from University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands.
