The Northwest Center for Philosophy for Children has had a busy winter and spring. Some highlights:
Conferences - All three Center staff gave talks at the American Philosophical Association Pacific meeting in Seattle in April. Center Director Jana Mohr Lone is giving the keynote at the San Diego State University Graduate Conference in Ethics in May, "Philosophy and Education: A Gateway to Inquiry," and Jana, Sara Goering and David Shapiro have had a joint paper about respect, inquiry, and philosophy for children accepted at a Vancouver conference to be held this July.
K-12 Education - Center staff and UW students participating in the spring "Pipeline" Philosophy for Children seminar are currently facilitating philosophy classes in 8 different classrooms in two elementary schools. Over the past year, the Philosophers in the Schools program sent UW graduate and undergraduate students, as well as Center staff, into five different primary and secondary schools, facilitating philosophy classes that reached over 250 K-12 students.
Publications – Education Director David Shapiro's new book, Plato Was Wrong! Footnotes on Doing Philosophy with Young People, was published this spring, and Director Jana Mohr Lone's new book, titled The Philosophical Child, will be published in fall 2012, both by Rowman & Littlefield. Jana Mohr Lone's co-edited book, Philosophy and Education: Introducing Philosophy to Young People,and Program Director Sara Goering's co-edited book, Philosophy in Schools: An Introduction for Philosophers and Teachers, will also both be published in 2012.
